The National Assembly was informed on Monday that no bird flu case has so far been reported in Pakistan. Responding to a calling attention notice, Federal Minister for Environment Tahir Iqbal said the government was watchful to avert Avian Influenza virus, known as bird flu.

Tahir Iqbal said the government was adopting precautionary measures on war footing and there is no such danger to Pakistani poultry industry.

He informed the Lower House that the government in collaboration with the WWF was providing training to veterinary doctors and other concerned officials to cope with the situation.

Meanwhile, Minister of State for Defence Zahid Hamid informed the National Assembly that the government had not exempted houses having an area of less than five marlas from property tax in the cantonments.

He said the government was considering the proposal as financial repercussions of the move are still being observed. "The in-depth study is being carried out and final decision would be made after monitoring its financial repercussions," he added.

Zahid said there is a big difference between cantonment areas and urban areas as cantonments generate their own revenues to provide civic services and also finance development projects.
